Where Do Chicks Come From?

By Amy E. Sklansky

The excellent illustrations of the egg-laying anatomy of the hen, structure of the egg, and embryo to chick development process and hatching process qualify this book for recommendation. The one shortcoming of this book is that it only depicts chickens in a free-range setting and hatching eggs in a nest. Educators in the process of incubating eggs can discuss that issue when they read this book. This book received high marks for discussing which eggs are fertile, why, and which eggs are not. It actually contains a page explaining that the eggs children eat for breakfast are not fertile.
