Mini-Grants

White-Reinhardt Mini-Grants
The Mini-Grant Program funds projects that will increase agricultural literacy. County and state Farm Bureaus may apply for grants of up to $500 for classroom education programs for grades K-12 to initiate new programs or expand existing programs to additional grade levels or new subject areas. Grants are available on a competitive basis.

2009 White-Reinhardt Mini-Grants Awarded
The 2009 White-Reinhardt Mini-Grants were awarded to the 23 best ideas submitted to the Foundation.

Adams County (IL)
Will use the funds to create a curriculum on locally grown commodities for students. It will include what commodities are found in consumer products and how to calculate how far food travels.

Alaska Farm Bureau
Alaska AITC will purchase and lend agricultural DVDs to educators.

Arizona Farm Bureau
Will expand the poultry curriculum kit to include materials needed to hatch chicks in the classroom. The kits are available for loan to teachers across the state.

Bay County (MI)
Promotion & Education Committee will provide an incubator and accessories, along with training, for elementary teachers to teach embryology. Hatched chicks will be raised by Farm Bureau members then processed for meals for local missions.

Benton County (IA)
Plans to purchase an observatory bee hive, hand crank honey extractor and swarm of bees to incorporate beekeeping education and show its importance in the food and fiber system.

Edwards County (IL)
Will use the funds to provided apple learning stations at the two grade schools in their county, including apple trees and materials that teachers can use to conduct apple projects.

Franklin County (IL) -
Will use the funds to assist their Ag in the Classroom program featuring classroom visits and reading books about agriculture to students with the help of fun-loving puppets.

Fulton County (IL)
Plans to initiate a monthly letter writing program where committee members will write to urban students about their farms. The letters will come with books, DVDs, and model farm equipment relevant to the farm season.

Hartford County (CT)
Will expand the Agriscience high school curriculum as well as incorporate K-6th graders by developing a unit on bee keeping. The unit would include a Master Bee Pollinator Kit and relevant books on apiculture.

Huron County (MI)
Plans to initiate a first grade Ag in the Classroom project that includes classroom visit and distributing books on fruits and farming to emergent readers.

Indiana Farm Bureau
Plans to purchase GPS units and design lessons to teach geocaching and how to scout crops, monitor crop growth and track water resources. The units would be loaned to county Farm Bureaus to use during classroom visits or ag day activities.

Jefferson County (OH)
Plans for an Agriculture Awareness Day at the county fair that will provide hands-on activities about the food and fiber system.

Kaufman County (TX)
Plans to use the funds to start a new classroom project that will allow students to examine chicken embryos, observe a beating heart, and hatch chicken eggs.

Kendall County (IL) -
Plans to put together a kit from which teachers and students in the county could learn about GPS and its applications in the agriculture industry.

Lafourche Parish (LA)
Plans to initiate the Positive Action School Site, an alternative program for expelled students who participate in a gardening project.

Michigan Farm Bureau
Plans to grow their “Captain Food Fabulous” project to be a series of ten books centered on the state’s major agricultural products.

Pittsylvania County (VA)
Plans to purchase agriculture-related books to be read and discussed interactively with students and then donated to 11 school libraries.

South Carolina Farm Bureau
The grant will be used to help establish an Ag Book of the Year Program for the entire state of South Carolina.

Texas Farm Bureau
Will use the grant to develop a computer-based interactive game using AFBFA’s “Addressing Misconceptions about Agriculture” program.

Union County (KY)
Will use the funds for their “Bushels for Books,” which promotes agriculture literacy by providing positive and accurate books that will be held in school libraries. Farm Bureau members will visit classrooms to read the books.

Vermilion County (IL)
Plans to create barn-shaped shelving units that will hold children’s books and other learning materials about agriculture and farm products. The barns will be rotated to different schools.

Virginia Ag in the Classroom
Will print and distribute soybean books to be used for the promotion of the AITC program. These copies will be used to market workshop services to different school divisions in Virginia.

Warren-Henderson County (IL)
Plans to initiate the “Farm Days” project, which uses farm animal puppets to encourage students to read agriculture- related books.
